Some of you proudly own 30+ lipsticks/gloss dating back to who knows when. Some of you own purple mascara from your rebel days. Some of you may even own powder blush from high school…it’s still a great color so you keep it. Did you know that every makeup product should be thrown out and replaced between 1-3 years? Time to toss that high school memory!
Here are the guidelines for product shelf-life:
* Oil-Free Foundation: 1 year
* Cream or Compact Foundation: 18 months
* Concealer: 12-18 months
* Powder: 2 years
* Blush and Bronzer: 2 years
* Cream Blush: 12-18 months
* Powder Eye shadow: 2 years
* Cream Eye shadow: 12-18 months
* Eyeliner: 2 years
* Liquid eyeliner: 3-6 months
* Mascara: 3 months TIP: If you don’t want your mascara to dry out sooner than its fresh date, don’t pump the wand in and out — you’re only exposing the product to drying air.
* Lipstick: 2 years TIP-If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer.
* Lip liner: 2 years
* Lip gloss: 18-24 months
* Nail Color: up to 1 year depending on the quality
* Sponges: Wash weekly and toss monthly
* Cosmetic Brushes: Wash weekly with a mild soap and warm water. Replace yearly or as fraying occurs.
*Toothbrush: 3 months
* Tweezers: every 2 to 3 years or when they get dull and lose their grip. Some tweezers can be sharpened for a longer life span.
If your cosmetics smell funny, it’s a good indication that you should toss them. If you can’t remember when you purchased it, throw it out. If you can’t part with it because of memories, draw a nice picture with it (perhaps a self portrait?) and then toss it.
One final tip, date each product with a permanent marker when you buy it then you don’t have to remember when you bought it. Now, go purge and replenish!
